5 Questions To Consider Before Accepting A Job Offer

It's important to remember the etiquette involved when you accept a job offer.

Never make a decision this important on the spur of the moment.

When that phone call or letter arrives, don't be tempted to say "yes" there and then!

Accepting the job offer is something you're entitled to think about. Remember to ask yourself the following five questions first:

  1. Do you really want to leave your current job?
    We often don't realise what we've got until things change. So it's important to do a sanity check: do you really want to leave your current job? Is there anything that could be changed about your current role that would make you want to stay?

  2. Do you really want THIS job?
    If you've decided that you really want to leave your current job, then do you actually want this job? Is it really the best move for you or are you getting desperate? Are you potentially jumping from the frying pan into the fire? Is the new job really better - or just an escape from a job you hate?

  3. Do you need to know more?
    Then call them! If you have any outstanding questions you need answering before you would accept the job offer, make sure you ask them. Assume nothing. Get any verbal promises in writing. We can't emphasise enough how important this is.

  4. Do you want to negotiate over salary?
    If you want to negotiate over salary, then this is best done in a planned manner, when you've had a chance to get your facts together. Check out our salary negotiation advice, before you make any decisions.

  5. How Do You Want To Accept The Job Offer?
    It's ok to accept a job offer verbally. This could be called "agreement in principle". Or you could even ask for 24 hours / a few days to think things through. Don't be pressurised into an on-the-spot decision. Make sure you see and sign the full contract, before making any formal commitment. There could be clauses you object to.
